Tohatsu RPM Chart
Tohatsu outboard engines are engineered to operate within a defined engine speed range at Wide-Open Throttle (WOT) to deliver proper combustion efficiency and dependable service life. Most current Tohatsu four-stroke outboards are designed to run within a WOT range of approximately 5,000 to 6,000 RPM, with ideal results occurring when the engine reaches the higher portion of that window under normal load conditions.
Recommended RPM limits differ by engine displacement, gear ratio, and production year. The Tohatsu propeller chart below reflects commonly published WOT RPM ranges compiled from manufacturer specifications and marine propeller reference data.
Operating Guidance:
Propeller Matching
Propeller selection has a direct impact on engine speed. If a Tohatsu outboard fails to reach its rated RPM at full throttle, the propeller pitch is likely too aggressive. If the engine consistently exceeds the recommended range, additional pitch may be required. In general, adjusting pitch by one inch will change WOT engine speed by roughly 150–200 RPM, though hull design and load can influence results.
Cruising RPM Range
For sustained operation, Tohatsu outboards typically perform efficiently when operated below peak output. A cruising RPM range near 70% of maximum rated RPM offers a practical balance of speed, fuel economy, and reduced mechanical strain.
